Goal: Install Expressnet on a PC, and use it to re-program the payphone smartboard.

We have:
  • an old PC with 3.5" floppy drive
  • a Protel modem
  • a copy of Windows 98
  • a copy of Expressnet software
  • two analog phone lines, one for the payphone, one for the modem

Progress to 4pm Wednesday
  • The payphone is ringing! Francois has it connected to the phone line in the innovation lab. It's confused by needing to dial 9 to call out (?)
  • Windows 98 is installed, a process which did not in fact require a boot floppy. Many drivers are missing. Needs a mouse, but not critical since the Expressnet interface is text-based anyway.
  • Expressnet is installed! It tries to initialize the modem using AT commands! This is very exciting.
  • Andrew is making a gender changer from... bits of serial port?
  • We realize that we need a 9-pin to 25-pin serial connection. On the upside, Andrew got to solder something.

Progress to 12PM Thursday
Melissa got a cable, got the server software and payphone talking! See it on Vimeo!

There, you’ll find:
  • A scan of the ExpressNet reference manual
  • Two folders:
    • ExpressNet v1.55 (copy of our “ExpressNet v1.55 upgrade” diskette)
    • ExpressNet conf files (copy of our “ExpressNet conf files” diskette)
      • One of the files on the diskette (Copy of X3LOCAL\SPOOL\SPOOLAA.AAB - 11KB) was corrupted and couldn’t be copied.

We also have another diskette labelled “ExpressNet v1.5 Full Install”, but that disk appears to be corrupted. Hopefully, the v1.55 INSTALL.EXE file can do the trick.
